Abstract

O artigo aborda a trajetória da humanidade, relacionando-a ao avanço da ciência e da tecnologia e sua influência na sociedade contemporânea, também denominada sociedade da informação, do conhecimento, da aprendizagem. Destaca as funções da biblioteca pública ao longo do tempo, e sua sintonia com o permanente processo de mudança social, salientando o perfil, competências e contribuição do profissional da informação bibliotecário nesse contexto. Discorre sobre as atuais tecnologias de informação e comunicação, com ênfase na Internet, e seu reflexo no cotidiano dos cidadãos, realçando a questão da exclusão digital, um desafio a ser enfrentado pela América Latina.

Author Biography

Vanda Angélica da Cunha

Juazeiro, Brasil (1940). Bibliotecária con mestrado em Ciência da Informação na Universidade Federal da Bahia (Brasil).Experiência profissional centrada na implantação e gerência de bibliotecas públicas, área em que apresenta expressiva produção científica. Atualmente desenvolve a pesquisa Autonomia na Busca da Informação na Internet: Capacitação de Bibliotecários, Auxiliares de Biblioteca e Usuários. Diretora de Informação e Ação Cultural da Fundação João Fernandes da Cunha, onde coordena o Projeto de Extensão PROLER Salvador, destinado a estimular o hábito de leitura.

Atualmente ser professora assistente do Instituto de Ciência da Informação da Universidade Federal da Bahia (Brasil).
